The Bishop Tale Sister Frevisse Medieval Mysteries Margaret Frazer 9780425144923 Books

SPOILER ALERT: Another excellent installment in the series. Of course, this is only book two, but my hope is the series continues along at its high standard.

Once again, the mystery is complex and the culprit not immediately obvious. Only when Sister Fiacre was killed did the light go on and I guessed who and the motivation for the killings. Sad, really.

I love the detail of the cloister and the nuns duties and routines. Margaret Frazer really did a good job of immersing the reader in time and place. (For those, like me, who really enjoy visualizing a scene, there are a couple of maps of St. Frideswide on Margaret Frazer's website which you might want to check out.) She also possessed a gift for making a simple scene quite poignant. The whole scene with Meg and Barnaby and the orange had me tearing up.

The only annoyance in the entire book was, again, Montfort. But he is meant to be annoying, so Margaret Frazer did her job there. I only hope Dame Frevisse does not have to put up with his ignorance in every single book. I've already ordered the next title and can't wait for it to get here.

The Bishop Tale Sister Frevisse Medieval Mysteries Margaret Frazer 9780425144923 Books Reviews

Sister Frevisse meets Joliffe and his players for the first time in this novel. The clever nun must investigate multiple deaths while remaining detached from the group of traveling players who remind her of youth on the open road. Narrated by a servant struggling to survive and better her life and that of her family, it is a study of human nature in hard times.
Ms Frazer has given us another delightfully well written mystery. Although to be honest, things that seemed to be utterly baffling to the characters were painfully obvious tor. But even with that, this is an immensely enjoyable read. I am so grateful that Ms Frazer is as prolific a writer to provide me with so many more volumes to look forward to enjoy reading.
While this book is a little slow to start (in terms of the mystery/murder), it more than makes up for it by beautifully establishing the main characters (Sister Frevisse, the nuns at the priory, the main villagers and the troupe of actors), and the time and place. The details of medieval life are seamlessly woven into this mid-winter tale, set in a small village. Once the mystery of just who killed the husband of one of the nuns' servants is introduced, the pace increases. When suspicion falls on the vagrant troupe, Sister Frevisse summons her considerable powers of deduction to help solve the crime. But when the body count starts to rise and Sister F learns the crowner is enroute to wrap up the case, she knows she must work hard to not only find the guilty party, but ensure an innocent person is not convicted.

A nice, tight story for lovers of history and slow-moving, but well-plotted crimes.
I have read most, if not all of the Sister Frevisse series and have enjoyed several of their characteristics. I am impressed that Ms. Frazer is not afraid to have the good Nun be a really deeply prayerful person. (Would that I could pray like that!) That shows up in all of the books I have read.

And, unlike other series, the author's plots are dissimilar, I am an avid mystery reader and am unhappy when I have to say to myself, "Here we go again, same old, same old" while reading a series book. Sister does manage to find herself in some unusual situations for a cloistered nun but always with good reason. Maybe because I was taught by cloistered nuns I find the descriptions of convent life familiar and heartwarming, even though the convent itself seems to be bitter cold, even in the summer!

The characterizations I find to be pretty much true to life, no one is all good, or all bad, well, except for the villain of course. In the Bishop's Tale, even the Lord Bishop has his good and his rather snarky virtues and faults.

I would highly recommend reading this series, but do try too read them in order, if you can find that out.
The second in the series and the first to introduce the companion series. A troupe of players arrives with an injured man in tow. The injured man is the drunkard husband of a part time worker at the convent. He drunkenly crashed his cart doing himself serious harm. The drunkard son blames the players and the other son wants nothing to do with his mother's plan for him joining the priesthood. Shortly after the death of his father, the son gets in a fight with the players and then he is murdered. One of the players is suspected, but Sister Frevisse isn't buying it. The bumbling crowner is nowhere to be found so she investigates hoping to have the real culprit before the crowner goes on a misguided tear. Did not suspect the killer until the very last murder. Fun cast of characters showing lots of different temperaments
The general opinion is that Sir Clement Sharpe was struck down by God at the feast following the funeral of Dame Frevisse's uncle, Thomas Chaucer. Sir Clement was obviously guilty of blasphemy, but it was hardly first time, and Henry Beaufort, Cardinal Bishop of Winchester and Thomas Chaucer's good friend, is skeptical. Was God asleep or busy elsewhere on the other occasions when Sir Clement blasphemed, or did a human being take the opportunity to get rid of the quarrelsome noble? The bishop orders Dame Frevisse to investigate. She is reluctant at the start, but is drawn in ever deeper as she asks questions of those who were concerned, finding that Sir Clement had a host of enemies who were present at the feast. But if Sir Clement was murdered, how was it done? The story is told from a dual perspective, that of Dame Frevisse and the Bishop, and they both have a lot on their minds and hearts. After a while, the Bishop would be just as happy to end the investigation, but Frevisse pursues it to the end, answering the questions that other can't or won't.
SPOILER ALERT Another excellent installment in the series. Of course, this is only book two, but my hope is the series continues along at its high standard.
