The first novel in the To Be Sinclair series was a real surprise for me. The writing and editing was nearly flawless and the story definitely satisfied. I would have rated it 4.5 stars if possible. This smart, richly-detailed tale beautifully blends science fiction and romance in a lush setting with intricate politics, backstory and world-building. I connected with both Felicia and Victor from their very first exchange and throughout their difficult romantic journey. After all, it's not easy to forge a love affair when he is the reigning Emperor of a planetary system and she is a brilliant, and always chaperoned, student.
Victor's tragic backstory as the sole survivor of his royal family affected me on a very deep level. In spite of this dark history, he's risen to become a powerful and respected but very lonely ruler. The large supporting cast of characters--from royals to rivals to watchmen to mentors to peers--are equally well drawn and fleshed-out.
Though this story may not appeal to those who demand a lightning pace, there are several unexpected and dangerous twists in the plot that continuously up the stakes, as well as offering puzzling mysteries to be solved. Victor and Felicia often struggle through their conflicts and decisions about their future--and whether that future will be together or apart. I related to Felicia's choices on every level as she grappled with what she was driven to do vs. her love for Victor and her desire to be part of his life. I also respected Victor for having the strength to compromise, even in the face of criticism and censure by powerful foes.
In addition to effectively combining science fiction and romance, I think this novel may also hold a lot of appeal for readers of Historical Romances, since there are definite parallels in the society, politics, pacing and style. Although Eva Caye credits Lois McMaster Bujold for her story's inspiration, I think she has created a universe that is completely unique in its own rights.

Dignity To Be Sinclair Book 1 eBook Eva Caye Tracy Seybold Reviews
This is one of the strangest books I’ve ever read. It read like an historical romance except it referenced space shuttles instead of horse driven carriages.
The characters spoke to each other in very formal ways. Victor says at one point, “I shall save that datum for future applications.” ??? In another place Felicia says, “I, however, was wondering how and when I might secretly get a contraceptive implant.” I struggled to understand if Felicia was being pretentious or sarcastic or silly. I wish the author would have added better descriptions to set the context better. For this reason, I’m still not sure if I want to laugh at the things she said or roll my eyes. This girl makes Gwyneth Paltrow look down to earth. (Context - Not a compliment!)
I can’t say if the book is clean or not. It didn’t describe sex acts, for which I’m grateful, but does reference oral sex and sexual relationships. Suddenly in one place there’s a cluster of f-bombs. Strange.
The most annoying thing is Victor’s nickname for Felicia… hearth-fire. I feel like puking. That’s so stupid!!!!
“Happy birthday, my hearth-fire.” He says to her. Ugh.
I gave it 3 stars because it kept my interest and did provide the escapism I wanted. I definitely won’t continue to the series.
A Science Fiction Romance; an interesting concept. No monsters set on devouring as much of humanity as possible. No innocuous appearing bipedal beings secretly intent on enslaving us or wresting our planet and all it's natural resources from us. How refreshing!
Set approximately 500 years in the future with the associated changes one might expect along with others one would not typically anticipate, this novel brings something fresh and refreshing to the reader.
Ms. Caye's writing style develops the characters (a brilliant, young college student interested primarily in scientific pursuits and an Emperor of a multi planet federation) into an unseemly, yet believable romance. The scenes are richly described; the thoughts, concerns and motivations of each character are explored. The novel speaks to intelligence not being a hindrance to genuine altruistic emotion.
Ms. Caye has also shown sensitivity with regard to the sexual content associated with a romance.
As the first of a series about the Sinclair royals on a world somewhere else surrounded by wormholes, this sets the series up nicely. We are introduced to characters we will, I suspect, come to know well, particularly Felicia and Victor.
This isn’t your average sci-fi, though. Besides the science, there are also worlds and culture and depth in relationships. Felicia is a strong female character and I rooted for her from the get-go.
Well done to the author; this is a worthy read.
I typically shy away from books in the 'romance' genre due to the typical design of boy meets girl, marries girl, lives happily ever after. Much of the genre feels rushed, and overcome with sappy plot lines that simply create unrealistic characters. This is not the case with this book.
This story makes a fabulous foundation for the series. It has strong lead characters, both male and female. It is evident this story is well thought out, and put together. Every character faces realistic personal concerns. Each aspect of the story weaves together ways to overcome them, while not losing the individual self in the process. This is admirable and makes the book a fantastic story to read.
This is truly a story driven by the characters, not the events, which makes each person you interact with in the book a real person.
If you want a good story about personal reflection, individual strength, and unified efforts that amount to incredible individual achievements - this is the right book for your library.
